An ARV wing under assembly. Also in the background is the all-new water cooled, two stroke, 3 cylinder engine developed by Cosworth of Formula One fame. The 50kg engine burns around 14 litres of either mogas or avgas per hour yet generates a healthy 77 bhp.

Airtest – ARV Super 2

The market for new basic trainers has over the last few years more or less stagnated. However, to the queries from merchant bankers, “What sort of market exists to penetrate against just a couple of new trainers a year in the UK?”, Richard Noble, Chairman and Managing Director of ARV Aviation Ltd, responded “We’ll create our own market. “

Two Super 2s formate abeam the Isle of Wight, home of Richard Noble’s ARV production facility. Aircraft like the ARV will be necessary to arrest the rapidly increasing cost of ab initio training and to eventually replace the ageing battalions of American trainers that are no longer built

Noble’s unabashed resolve was vindicated early. After an intense design and building effort, the first Super 2 prototype flew in March 1985. By year’s end about 30 non-refundable deposits had been taken, including reported sales to Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Sweden (all with little dedicated sales effort, most work going into aircraft development for British certification). Orders slowed in early 1986 as certification approached. UK certification was gained in July, a mere 16 months after first flight. With the publicity abounding at Farnborough Airshow ’86 the momentum has been restored.

The first kit had been delivered in April 1986. In fact only about six orders for kits were taken, before the Company went to solely marketing completed and CofA’d aircraft in response to demand. In short it was the sort of drive you could expect from the holder of the World Land Speed Record.
