Interview – John Menadue
Jim Thorn Interviews John Menadue
Qantas is in a fighting mood as it enters what will historically become a crucial period of its long history. Ongoing air battles are in prospect with the United States due to the breakdown of the bilateral agreement on the important Pacific routes, a hint of partial privatisation is in the wind and Qantas must look to the future with new aircraft types to maintain its long haul leadership. To ascertain the answers to these and numerous other questions, Australian Aviation’s Managing Editor, Jim Thorn recently spoke with Qantas’ Chief Executive, John Menadue.
JT: International aviation is an exceptionally volatile industry. There was no better example of this than last year’s wiping off of hundreds of millions of dollars of income from IATA’s credit ledger following a bout of European terrorism and the aftermath of Chornobyl. In a recent speech you mention of the fact that airlines would effectively require nett margins in the region of 8 or 9% to be able to afford the very expensive new generation airliners that they need for the coming decades. With most carriers barely even reaching the 2% mark, how can the international airline community finance its future fleet requirements?
