Boeing's latest offering is the long awaited baby version of the hot selling 737 twinjet. The 737-500 is roughly the size of the -200 but uses derated high bypass CFM turbofans, a revised wing and uprated avionics and systems. The -500 is optimised for between 110 and 130 passengers. Boeing marketing strategy will revolve around selling both the -400 and -500 as a team designed to cover all sectors of the 100-150 seat airliner requirement.

Iae Ditch the Superfan in Shock Move:
International Aero Engines startled the aviation world during April with the shock announcement that their revolutionary Superfan very high bypass ratio shrouded turbotan was being dropped as a viable programme.
Most surprised by the announcement was Airbus who had been pinning much of their recent marketing efforts for the ultra long-range A340 on the availability of the IAE Superfan by 1992 A340 launch customer, Lufthansa, was also aghast at the off handed manner in which IAE officials dismissed the entire Superfan programme as “having been merely a design exercise To fill the void CFM wasted no time in offer- ing an uprated version of their established CFMSG engine for the A340. Designated CFM56-5-53, the new engine will produce upwards of 33,000lb thrust and be available by 1991 for entry to service the following year. The newer engine will also be ideal for applications on stretched versions of the A320 CFM also quote an increase in fuel efficiency of 4% which Airbus says will restore the payload range equations recent recently quoted for the Superman powered A340.
