The shape of things to come, GE and McDonnell Douglas are now fight testing the Stage 2 version of the GE36 Ultra-High Bypass UDF engine aboard an MD-80 test bed. The GE36 has already performed to expectations aboard a Boeing 727 through last year and will spend most of 1987 being test-flown in a more demanding fight regime mounted on the port side of this MD-80 Both Boeing (7J7) and MDC (MD-91X) are planning to use the GE36 UDF engine for their future airliner programmes.

Us Coast Guard Nomad Purchase Not a Direct Sale:
Ike us, you thought the reported price of $A29m, for seven Nomad Search master aircraft for the USCG was a little high then don’t worry, it isn’t a misquote.
The $A29m actually is basically a contra under the terms of the defence export initiative of October 1986 whereby the aircraft would be provided and paid for by reductions in the cost of inbound US equipment purchased by Australia. The reductions will be in the form of waivers of the research and development and other non-recurring costs which Australia would normally be charged as part of the equip ment price.
