While the single-seat Mustang had well and truly proved its worth as a long-range escort fighter, that very success – a function of the very long ranges and therefore endurances the aircraft was capable of operating over – raised the issue of a new problem.
Pilot fatigue and boredom was an unplanned for by-product of these missions, particularly those in the Pacific over large stretches of water, and after six or seven hours in the air, the average Mustang pilot was in fairly poor shape.
