Superfan lives! Well not really, International Aero Engines may have had their credibility dented by the recent A340 Superfan fiasco though to prove that nothing in life is really new we show you a similar principle as adapted to a totally different type of aircraft. Those of you with good memories will immediately recognise this as the Dowty ducted propulsor Islander test bed that flew during the late seventies. The shrouded propellers offered slightly better thrust dispersion, lower noise signature and ultimately proved about as popular as ham at a Bar Mizvah! We don't really know why the idea failed, but there again neither does IAE!
