On the Airbands

Time to turn on the airband receiver and get down to some serious monitoring again! We’ve had lots and lots of mail bearing the fruits of hours of airband monitoring conducted by readers of Australian Aviation.

Darren Heiberg of Lalor, Victoria writes to brief us on a British Airways 747, called ‘Speedbird-one-one”, which was on final approach to Tullamarine’s runway 27.

BA11: “Melbourne Approach, what altitude is that airship we can see just above the city skyline?” (Just prior to changing to tower frequency) Approach: “Speedbird-one-one, I have no knowledge of any airship in the area, so I can’t help you there. I don’t have him on radar either. ” BA11: “I think it’s one of Bondy’s. Don’t worry, there probably aren’t enough tinnies on board to give you a radar reading!”
