Regional Airline Director
In our 1987 Regional Airline Directory a trend has started to appear, where passenger loadings are once again on the increase, but the number of airlines carrying these passengers has dropped sharply.
With rising Government costs, it appears that the smaller operators are being pushed aside by those who are more able to absorb these additional charges. For the twelve months ending December 31st 1986 provisional figures indicate that 1,128,000 passengers were carried. Though we have over 50 operators s 12 more than 198
contributing to this figure it is interesting to note that 950,000 or 84% of these passengers were carried by only 9 airlines – Aeropelican, Air Queensland, Eastern Australia, Hazelton, Kendell, Lloyd, Rottnest, Skywest and Sunstate. Of these carriers, 4 are tied in with Ansett-Aeropelican, Hazelton, Kendell and Lloyd while 4 are with Australian Airlines-Air Queensland, Eastern Australia, Skywest and Sunstate. The dominant force in Australia’s regional operators is Kendell Airlines, who alone carried nearly 227,000 passengers for the twelve months ending June 30th 1987.
For 1987, passenger figures should continue to rise as the effect of Air Queensland’s withdrawal from S. E. Queensland takes place. Sunstate and Lloyd should be the main beneficiaries. The recent announcement by Air Queensland that they were terminating services to the Gulf and part of Cape York will also benefit commuter operators in this area.
