MDX Could Be Australia’s Entree to an International Collaboration Programme
The announcement during August that Hawker de Havilland would be looking at joining with McDonnell Douglas Helicopters as a partner in designing, developing and manufacturing a new light helicopter was received throughout the Australian aerospace industry with much enthusiasm.
HdH and MDH signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) back in early 1986 as to the possible joint development of a successor to the MDH 500 series. At the time there was a possibility that China would also come in as a third partner though this has now been discounted and the final teaming is expected to be one third HdH and two-thirds for MDH. MDH project a total programme cost of around of which HdH would have to fund between $US30/50m over three to five years. This is within the funding capabilities of HdH which would also mean that the company would not have to approach the Federal Government for project financing.
