DC-3 for Big Mac
Mcdonald’s hamburger restaurants have added a second DC- 3 to their Australian fleet. Presently in service is VH-AER which is painted in Trans Australia Airlines colours and operates from their base at West Lakes, Adelaide. Now they have added ‘VH-MMF’ of MacRobertson Miller Airlines, which will shortly come on line at Midland, Western Australia.
‘VH-MMF’ is in fact the former Airlines of South Australia DC-3 VH-ANW which on October 4th, 1971 had the honour of operating the last DC-3 service for that airline. VH-ANW was then flown to Essendon for storage. On January 27th, 1972 VH-ANW made its last flight when it was flown from Essendon to Gawler. There the aircraft was dismantled and trucked to a youth camp at Chain of Ponds in the Adelaide Hills. In November 1985 VH-ANW was once again dismantled and moved by road to Parafield. There the DC-3 was painted in the markings of MacRobertson Miller Airlines, registered VH-MMF and named ‘Fortesque’. The fuselage of the DC-3 departed Parafield for Midland on July 21st. Presently stored in the Midland area, the DC-3 will eventually be displayed outside the local McDonalds. Meanwhile the real VHMMF sits forlornly on the grass at Berwick Airfield in Victoria.
