Airline Affairs
Boom, Boom, Boom:
Let’s hope the stock market crash doesn’t affect the extremely rosy situation that is international air travel in 1987. Provisional figures released recently indicate that the number of international passengers travelling aboard US airlines is up a tremendous 25% on 1986. This is a reflection of the low value of the greenback and the resultant surge in Europeans and Japanese holidaying in North America, the exact opposite to the situation that existed several years ago. Meanwhile, US domestic activity was up some 9. 5% in passenger uplift, a similar figure to that recorded locally. And if you think that is healthy then spare a thought for that rapidly growing airline, Cathay Pacific. Cathay for the first nine months of 1987 saw an increase in its full flights by some 54% as against the same period last year. Load factors leapt from ant already very profitable 71% to 77% while yield has increased to 13. 7%, something that must give the big US carriers food for thought.
Privatisation Battle Hots Up:
The stockmarket crash has dampened the mood toward privatising a number of key Government owned enterprises and has seriously weakened Prime Minister Hawke’s ability to secure the privatisation of either Australian Airlines or Qantas in the short term.
