Airline Pilot Training: The Whys and Wherefores of the World’s Latest Boom Industry
The demand for airlines both worldwide and within Australasia for pilots is increasingly on the rise.
The General aviation sector on the other hand continues with less defined and uniform growth – and presently within Australia employs new pilots largely on a replacement basis. The replacement need in both GA and the Defence Forces though is substantial – since mid-1986, Ansett and Australian Airlines alone have employed around 120 new pilots while Qantas has taken about 80 others.
Indeed, Capt. Allan Terrell, Qantas’ General Manager Operations, recently spoke of the airline anticipating a need for a further 80 new pilots per annum for the next five years to cater for a Qantas predicted growth rate of just over 8% yearly, which will additionally require the purchase of three new 767s or a 2 to 1 mix of 767/747s annually just to take on the new traffic.
