On The Airbands

Airband communications are a bit of a worry sometimes. You tend to wonder how some of the people within the system got to penetrate the system in the first place.

A pilot living at Kununurra in Western Australia provides this rather amusing but also slightly worrying look at an aviator who perhaps should not have been in the air: Aircraft: “Flightland, this is Delta Uniform Mike, taxying for local flight, copied ATIS, four POB. ” Flight Service: “Delta Uniform Mike, go ahead your endurance. ” Aircraft: “Flightland, this is Delta Uniform Mike, taxying for local flight, copied ATIS, four POB. ” Flight Service: “Delta Uniform Mike, copied all that, go ahead your endurance!” Aircraft: “What do you mean?” Flight Service: “How much fuel do you have on board?” Aircraft: “Oh we’ve got two full tanks of fuel in this aeroplane!” Flight Service: “How many minutes is that?” Aircraft (still unsure): “Oh. . . standby. ” This one must win the award for 1988 for ineptness. I have heard several other examples of the same thing recently and it does make one wonder. The FIS place name and aircraft registration used in this story are fictitious and the pilot who alerted me to the incident wishes to remain anonymous.
