Part Twenty-Seven in a Series Examining the Airliners That Established Civil Aviation in Australia

As Australia enters this bicentennial year, many interesting events have been planned to highlight notable occasions and facets of our nation’s history. The importance of aviation will be underlined in some truly memorable events.

Amongst the various aircraft manufacturers who have rendered such valuable service to Australian aviation, the Douglas Aircraft Company has the longest continuous involvement in supplying frontline equipment to our airlines. Since the first DC-2 commenced operations with Holymans Airways on 5 May 1936, an honour role of classic reliable Douglas aircraft has traversed Australian skies – DC-2, DC-3, DC-4, DC-5, DC-6, DC-6B and DC-9. This more than half a century of excellence continues till this day with the DC-9.

During the 1960s there was intense competition amongst several manufacturers competing for the short/medium haul jet airliner market. The first jet airliner offerings from two of the major US companies Boeing and Douglas, were large long-range aircraft, the 707 and DC-8. Despite previous success with civil airliner production, both Convair and Lockheed were not leading contenders in the marketplace at that stage.
