The GIV is perhaps an excellent example of how a good initial airframe design lends itself to progressive updating as new technology becomes available. Derived initially from the GIturboprop of the late fifties, the modern-day benefits through the use of advanced technology RR Tay high bypass turbofans, lightweight state of the art avionics and systems and a low drag, high lift wing that was the hallmark of the GIii model.

Airtest – Gulfstream G.IV

In early October, I had the very great pleasure of experiencing a long range flight in what most people would judge the ultimate corporate jet – The Gulfstream IV.

The leader in the Heavy Iron stakes is not just a revamp of the very successful Gulfstream Ill but a significant, well developed, technological evolution of a proven business aircraft design that had its roots back in the late 1950s. The Gulfstream IV has seen major improvements in the areas of fuselage and cabin lengths, aerodynamics, speed, range, hydraulic systems, advanced flight deck, fly-by-wire braking and steering and the installation of a new Rolls Royce Tay turbofan based on combined Spey and RB211 experience.

For almost three decades the Gulfstream has been the dominant aircraft in executive transport – the standard by which other business aircraft are judged, and this began with the introduction of the turboprop-powered Gulfstream I in 1958. The Gulfstream I evolved into the very successful turbofan powered Gulfstream II in 1969, and this aircraft instilled such confidence in its operators that it created a world wide market for intercontinental business jets enabling long overwater flights to become routine.
