Pride of the Singapore Aircraft Industries display was their A-4 Super Skyhawk. This aircraft features a vastly updated avionics suite in addition to using the more powerful and fuel efficient non-afterburning version of the GE F404 turbofan. (right) It is good to see Indonesia again getting involved in the bi-annual Asian Aerospace exhibition. This year its primary exhibit was the Indonesian-built CN-235 which is presently in service with domestic operator, Merpati.

Asian Aerospace ‘88 a Massive Success
A cynic once said that when the first Asian. Aerospace air show was launched back in the early eighties, that it was merely a thinly disguised device to help fill then empty Singaporean hotel rooms.
At that time perhaps there was an element of half truth in such a statement. Today however that is all history as the 1988 Show (Jan 27-31) ably testified – Asian Aerospace has not only come of age but has also become well and truly the third major aerospace trade show on the international calendar after Paris and Farnborough.
One reason for this is that Asia and its Pacific rim nations are in a boom mode. This region will within five years become air transport’s largest individual market with a per annum growth more than double that of even North America and Europe. The technological emergence of Asia’s once backward economies has introduced a new order to world commercial thinking. That tiny Singapore (which is smaller than the average metropolitan areas of our major cities!) is the Switzerland of the East is a fact that becomes more pronounced with each passing year.
