On The Airbands

A big thank you to the large number of readers who recently took time to send in material relating to military monitoring, and in particular, those who correctly identified the radio call ‘Eaglehawk’ as an Iroquois helicopter.

One reader, Wayne Russell, from Grose Vale NSW is also a pilot, and snapped a quick photograph of four Iroquois choppers using this tactical callsign while he was flying a light aircraft over The Nepean River between Warragamba and Penrith NSW. Unfortunately, we were unable to print the photo due to picture quality, but nevertheless, thanks for all the trouble you went to Wayne!

Your writer recently heard RAAF Hornets being delivered from Avalon using the special callsign ‘Peregrine’ and in each case, the lone Hornet has been escorted by a single Macchi. Three more ‘baffler’ callsigns not listed in the official RAAF listings but have been monitored by the author are ‘Top Gun’, ‘Chieftain Zero One’, and ‘Kestrel Zero Four’. I strongly suspect the first one is a RAAF helicopter callsign, either Squirrels or Iroquois, but I’m not. certain. Can you assist us here? Write to me it you can.
