1988 Major Airline Directory
1987 was the year that airlines in Australia and New Zealand gave indication that they were looking forward to the future with increased enthusiasm. This was the year when a number of major decisions and events took place which will influence the direction the industry will take over the next decade.
This was the year that the Australian Government gave notice that they would end the two-airline agreement in October 1990. This event in itself has generated a major debate on deregulation and privatisation. This was the year when the crusading East-West Airlines was taken over by the TNT/News Ltd combine, thus placing them in the Ansett camp. The East-West name will remain but many changes have yet to be made to the route structure of both East-West and Air NSW.
This was the year when Air New Zealand’s monopoly on the main trunk routes was challenged with the commencement of jet services by Ansett New Zealand. This was the year when TNT/News Ltd signed contracts for $2. 75 billion worth of new aircraft to show that they have seemingly unlimited resources at their disposal.
