In Australian Service – Boeing’s 747
Boeing 747 Part I
Part Twenty Eight in a Series Examining the Airliners That Established Civil Aviation in Australia
No other commercial airliner carries a greater share of international travel and trade than the Boeing 747. Nor does any other airliner carry a greater burden of responsibility for the continued good fortunes of the world’s major airlines than the undisputed king of the skies, the majestic 747.
There are of course other fine long distance airliners in operation such as the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 and Lockheed TriStar while other promising new ventures such as the Airbus A340 and McDonnell Douglas MD-11 seem assured of a lucrative market share in the years ahead. However, it is highly unlikely that any of the newcomers will be capable of dislodging the 747 from its leading position as the dominant mass mover. They are directed more at specialist segments of the market, not the high capacity category so effectively handled by the Jumbo.
