Neville Clough Retires
In a busy airport environment the linchpin of effective commercial operation lies in the ability of the various Air Traffic Control specialists to be able to manage the hour to hour traffic flow, both in the pattern and on the airfield itself. Neville Clough is the Master Tower Controller for KSA, one of the busiest primary airports this side of the equator. With his retirement imminent, Bob Bell talks with him to ascertain some of the ingredients of keeping the pattern flowing under what are often trying circumstances.
“Neville Clough – Master Tower Controller”
In July this year, one of Sydney Airport’s most experienced and best air traffic controllers will retire, a situation that will be noted with some degree of sadness by pilots and airband monitors alike, as this man is most assuredly one of the greats.
Neville Clough is the Tower Controller at Sydney pilots will be recognised for his maturity, and deep, slightly gruff voice, with a very Australian accent. In years gone by, not so often now, pilots of airline aircraft would recognise the voice and address the Tower with a “Good evening Nev”, which in the ATC game is something you would have to classify as highly unusual at a major airport like Sydney.
Neville Clough is Senior Tower Controller, at the pinnacle of his chosen field. Perhaps he could have progressed further in an administrative post with ATC, but he has always and still prefers a job in the thick of the action, a ‘traffic separation role’. All he ever wanted to be since joining the Department was an Aerodrome Controller in the Tower, and he has spent the bulk of his years in controlling in the Tower.
