Our March issue of Short Finals, on the fallibility of those in command and in particular the deficiencies of the Avro Lancaster, created quite a lot of correspondence with the overall impression being given that we were not alone in our thoughts on the matter.

Carlo Kopp, AA’s technology specialist, added some interesting insights into RAF night bomber operations that makes you wonder how anybody survived Bomber Command at all! Carlo writes – “Bomber Command committed even greater atrocities against their crews than those you illustrated. Due to bureaucratic insistence, crews were instructed to leave their IFF transponders ‘on; while over Germany! Hence the Germans quickly built up a network of IFF (SSR) interrogators which provided a far better and more reliable raid warning assessment than conventional radar of the era. Also, the Monica tail warning radar was detectable some 50 kilometres away with the result that the Luftwaffe simply put direction finding receivers (RWR) on their Ju-88s and happily ambushed many a Lane without warning. ” Readers interested in additional information on this topic can refer to R V Jones “Most Secret War”, Coronet Press by Hodder & Staunton.
