Dha Glas II Suction Wing Glider
It is hard to believe that the origin of Australia’s first military glider can be traced to a tennis racquet manufacturer and a cotton mill. Nevertheless, this was indeed the case for the de Havilland Australia G1 glider. Also hard to believe is the fact that this innocuous plywood plane would become the subject of a revolutionary new aerofoil research project. Such was the case during the 1940s; a decade that brought to life incredible advances in aircraft technology.
The DHA G 1 was the result of a widely held fear of a Japanese invasion of the Australian mainland in 1942. The RAAF wanted the capability to move troops and equipment rapidly and saw the need for large numbers of gliders to carry out the task. Specification 5/42 was issued for the development of a troop-carrying glider; the prototype was to be a seven-seat aircraft.
