McDonnell Douglas to Develop Notar MD 500 Series Helo?
McDonnell Douglas Helicopters is considering the development of a Notar (No Tail Rotor) version of its existing MD 500 series light helicopter.
Detailed design work has already commenced and a flying prototype of the eventual production aircraft is scheduled for first flight in mid 1989. Certification would be achieved within six months of the first flight as much of the basic Notar R&D has already been achieved via MDH’s existing Notar proof of concept helo. If the programme is successful then MDH will begin manufacturing its 500 Series in Notar form from 1990 onwards.
