Defence Update
1988 a Vear of Change Within the Raaf
A major reorganisation of the Royal Australian Air Force’s Operational Command, a pick up in deliveries of the new tactical F-18 Hornet fighter, a major air defence exercise centred on Darwin, the opening of a new ‘bare’ air base at Derby, WA, and the forthcoming start of Hornet operations from a permanent base at Tindal, NT, highlight a range of recent, current and forward Air Force activities in Australia.
The RAAF has also confirmed that it will soon form a day fighter squadron with two-seat Macchi 326H jets. The reformation of No76 Squadron at Williamtown returns a famous RAAF fighter squadron to duty after 15 years in the wilderness. The squadron will have responsibilities for the introductory fighter course, fleet support work and day fighter continuation training.
