HAA Fee Increases
There has been a mixed reaction to the increase ih fees recently announced by the Helicopter Association of Australia. However, it appears that the majority of company members will pay the new rate while due to the traditional late payment of fees by most private members, it will not be known for some time how the new rates will affect the association as a whole. There cari be no argument that a fee increase was necessary to cover rising costs and to enable the HAA to hire a professional administrator who has long been needed to help offset the lack of continuity in many areas due to business commitments of the whole volunteer committee.
10,000th Helicopter Transfer
Port Hadland Port Authority established another milestone in helicopter charter with the 1o,000th Marine Pilot transfer by helicopter at Port Hedland which took place in July 1988. Port Hedland Port Authority pioneered the helicopter transfer of marine pilots in Australia, and it is claimed that Port Hadland became the, first port in the world where pilots regularly embarked on or disembarked from most ships by stepping into or from a helicopter landed on the ship’s hatch cover. The few other ports using a helicopter at the time. winched the Marine Pilot to and from ships. . Since the inception of the service on 29th December i 971 only two incidents have occurred. In 1972, a helicopter was damaged due to an old fashioned hatch cover and, in 1974, a strong wind squall damaged a helicopter while it was being secured aboard ship. Night flights began on 15th January 1973.
