• Qantas received its 50th Boeing jetliner and its 16th 747 during September. VH-EBO ‘City of Elizabeth’ first flew on the 8th and operated the scheduled QF4 San Francisco/Sydney service on the 18th. Amongst the passengers was Boeing’s Chairman, Mr Thornton Wilson who later at a press conference in Australia said that if there was a need in the future for a very high capacity transport, the 747 could be stretched in a double deck configuration to accommodate up to 1,000 passengers.
• The Defence Department has said that in view of the excellent performance of the Canberra in photo reconnaissance duties, it was intended to keep the type in service until at least 1984. The RAAF has 22 Canberras remaining in its inventory of which eight B Mk20s and four T Mk21s are serving with No2 Squadron at Amberley engaged in photo-reconnaissance and target towing tasks.
