During Our Bicentenary Year, Much Has Been Said to Laud the Important Role of Aircraft in Assisting Australia’s Development.

Our air heroes have been honoured for their pioneering contribution to the nation’s and overseas air routes. And by now, the excitement and spectacle of the assembled aircraft which participated in the Australian Bicentennial Air Show at Richmond will be prominent in many of our reader’s minds. The stars of the show were undoubtedly the military types, some large, some fast, some old and some new. The glamourous, large intercontinental airliners also have little trouble in capturing our imagination with the speed and comfort with which they whisk us around the globe. But there is another somewhat forgotten band of aircraft, which have contributed an equally vital role in our aviation history but do not command the same excitement as these other types. I refer to the large group of light aircraft, the at times unsung segment of the civil aircraft fraternity. To many of us, both pilot and aviation enthusiast, they hold fond memories of our introduction to flying.
