Ag operators are prone to problems by the very nature of their work. Operating constantly in often unfamiliar and marginal terrain in not always ideal weather conditions and always at extreme low level where there is little room for error. This Cessna A188 struck an unseen cow while crop dusting from a property near Kempsey. Though the aircraft was destroyed fortunately its pilot escaped unhurt.

Takeoffs are exhilarating. There’s the surge of power, followed by an arrow straight run, a lift-off at the precise speed, the feel of the mains rolling for a second after the nosewheel lifts and then the transfer of support from the landing gear to the wings. On the initial climb the ground falls always and on a clear day you can see farther and farther as you ascend.
But there is more to takeoffs than ecstasy. If the day is hot, the elevation high and the load to the max, a takeoff can turn into sweat city. If something happens when departing an airport like Coolangatta, on runway 32, there are few places besides downtown. At least there’s one consolation. If you’ve enough height, one of them can be one of Australia’s best surf beaches!
While engines are reliable, everyone knows that they can fail. We worry most about that happening during takeoff. What is the danger here and what is the relationship of this risk to the actions of pilots when planning and flying takeoffs?
