Kangaroo 89 Shaping up as Largest Military Exercise Ever

A wide range of RAAF, USAF and Army aircraft will participate in Exercise Kangaroo 89 in northern Australia between July and September, 1989.

In the air transport role, the RAAF intends committing a Boeing 707, 8 C-130 Hercules, 8 Caribous and 6 CH-47 Chinooks. The RAAF’s two re-equipped F-18 Hornet squadrons – No. 3 and No. 77 -will provide the bulk of the air defence force, along with an as yet unspecified number of USAF F-16 Falcons. They will be supported by USAF aerial refuelling tankers and AWACS, without which the air sector of the K89 would be somewhat unrealistic.
