The big winner (so far) of the US deregulation experiment has been the third level commuter or regional airline industry. Largely due to the majors abandoning their rural ports and the emergence of an entirely new generation of high speed, economical and passenger attractive 30/50 seat airliners (exampled here by the Saab 340 (left) and the Embraer Brasilia) the commuters have experienced strong growth, viable yields and a greater overall share of the total passenger market

Deregulation: The United States Experience
This series will aim to highlight the opportunities and pitfalls of the deregulated airline industry in Australia. To do that it will show in three installments how the US experience with deregulation is of benefit to us. Firstly, in this issue we will establish the facts about the US airline industry both before and after deregulation.
The next edition of Australian Aviation will then examine the Australian industry with a definitive description of the airline environment and the current state of play. Finally, in the May edition we will tie it all together with a look at the likely impact of deregulation in Australia.
