Navalised Squirrel to Be Developed

Aerospatiale is to produce a navalised attack version of their successful twin engined AS. 355 Squirrel. Designated the AS. 355M2, the new light helo will be the smallest blue water naval shipboard deployed helo ever built.

The AS. 355M2 will be equipped with a chin mounted 360° search radar and can also be configured for the attack and ASW roles. In the latter, the helo carries its own purpose designed Magnetic Anomaly Detector (MAD) equipment to locate and pinpoint submerged submarines. In the light attack role the AS. 355M2 can be configured with either a 20mm cannon or air to surface rockets, an ideal counter against small vessels or patrol craft.
