The A320 is the first airliner with side stick controllers and fully integrated displays, setting the standard for future aircraft. The clear, uncluttered cockpit displays, together with fly by wire technology, enables pilots to be better informed about their aircraft and to react faster in emergencies such as windshear. In the early part of this decade when it first became apparent that future airliners would have electronic instrumentation, fold down tables in place of a control column, a sidestick control and be virtually flown by a computer, many expressed a certain amount of chagrin. It will be the end of true seat-of-the-pants pilots they said; your future pilot will be nothing more than a systems manager. True or false?
The new Airbus Industrie A320 is now fully operational in Australia and it contains all of the new technology. Ask Ansett and Airbus pilots what they think of it and the answer is always consistent we never knew what we were missing.
