‘Insurrection’ Continues
The nine month old state of insurrection by general aviation operators incensed by hugely increased airways charges was continuing as 1989 rolled in. Most light aircraft operators were flatly refusing to pay the rates established last March 31 by the Airways Corporation and were following a policy of paying at a scale they believed to be fair and equitable – often only 20% of the authority’s demand.
The resistance was orchestrated by a body known as the Aviation Task Force. As the New Year arrived, a stalemate existed with the Airways Corporation refusing to negotiate with general aviation – at least not while the task force remained set in its intention to seek a High Court interpretation of the legislation empowering the corporation to set those charges.
