On The Airbands
A great deal is happening on the airbands right around Australia and indeed the world at present, resulting in a large volume of reader feedback mail with great stories to share with us.
I’ve received notification from Tom Boyd, of Global Aviation Support, Essendon Airport, that his company has taken over exclusive rights to distribute the WIN-108 airband receiver, and Tri-Anchor of Castle Hill in NSW will be relinquishing the product. I did mention this miniature receiver in the September 1988 issue of Australian Aviation, primarily for those monitoring enthusiasts with a limited budget and lesser requirements for the radio they wish to use while pursuing their interest in aviation. The radio can be equated as a ‘Cessna 152’ is compared with a ‘Citation”; there is no contest when the WIN-108 is compared with other all singing, all dancing VHF/UHF receivers covering the airband. Still, at $285, there will no doubt be a viable market for this small Japanese receiver.
A correspondent who wishes to remain anonymous and who works in the industry has detailed a transmission overheard some years ago in Canberra airspace. It was early summer, daylight saving had just restarted and the time in Canberra was about 12. 30pm. In the Sunshine State it would have been only 11. 30am. The players: VH-TJU, at that time a TAA DC-9 jet inbound to Canberra from the north, and Canberra Approach.
