Will Deregulation Get Off the Ground?

It is now barely eighteen months till Australia’s interstate air services are totally deregulated. Yet as the weeks pass into months, it is rapidly becoming clearer that it will be a miracle if anything approaching true deregulation will be in place in time to better serve the Australian travelling public.

The reasons for this sorry state of affairs are threefold. Firstly, there is an acute lack of viable terminal access in the two key airports of this nation, KSA and Tullamarine along with a timetable of Federal approvals, that make it virtually impossible to have a new airline in operation in time to have any hope of flying credibly against either Ansett or Australian. The second brick wall is the critical lack of skilled manpower who will be required to commence and maintain an all new airline. Thirdly, Australia’s continuing airworthiness capabilities are rapidly being eroded to the point where they will not be able to even remotely cope with the number of new entrants that are mooted.
