Register Review

The upward trend in the number of aircraft registered in Australia continues in this issue with almost twice as many entries as last issue in the New Allocation section.

Of the airliners registered Qantas added the first three long-range 767s to their fleet of all Boeing products, whilst Ansett received another three new Boeing 737s bringing their fleet to fifteen of this type. Ansett also took delivery of another two of the super quiet British Aerospace 146s for use on their Western Australian network. Boeing 707 HTC is not new to our skies as it has been operating into Australia from Hong Kong for the last three years. The aircraft first flew on 28th October 1965 and was delivered the next month to Lufthansa. It was the first of an order for fifteen 3308 series aircraft for use on the transatlantic routes between Europe and the east coast of America. Twelve years later it was converted to cargo configuration and transferred to German Cargo, a subsidiary of Lufthansa. The aircraft became surplus to requirements as German Cargo began to standardise on the Douglas DC-8 and it was taken out of service in 1984. The following year it was bought by the Ansett Group who set up Transcorp based in Hong Kong where the aircraft was used generally from Hong Kong to Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney with occasional flights to Auckland. Transcorp closed down its operations last year and now with a couple of strokes of a paint brush the 707 has changed from VR-HTC to VH-HTC and is operating dedicated cargo flights around Australia for Ansett Cargo. Third level airline additions were a Cessna Conquest for both Air North and Norfolk Island Airlines, two Cessna Golden Eagles for Skywest Aviation, two Piper Chieftains for Sungold Airlines and one each for Hazelton Airlines and Oxley Airlines and a third Saab 340 for Kendell Airlines.
