 Qantas Reducing Flights:

Qantas is reducing a number of services on selected routes to New Zealand, Asia, Europe and the US.

The cutbacks have largely been implemented due to a growing shortage of technical manpower plus a softening in some areas of the marketplace. Qantas has lost hundreds of highly trained maintenance personnel over the past two years due to its inability to offer competitive remuneration packages. The stuation has seen attrition in this area running at 18% in 1988 with the result that Qantas now even has to have some aircraft servicing performed by United in the US, a situation that would have been unthought of just five years ago.
