Traffic figures for 1988 that have been released have proved that for the majority of airlines in our region, this was a year of solid growth. Though times are buoyant airlines realise that just around the corner they face major expenditure for fleet re-equipment and inadequate airport facilities unable to cope with the projected rise in traffic.
The main contributing factors for strong growth in 1988 were the Australian Bicentennial, the Brisbane Expo and the realisation by the global tourist just how attractive and safe our region of the South Pacific is. Through the greater part of 1988 seats in and out of Australia and New Zealand were at a premium. The resultant increase in flights both from the international and domestic sectors showed up major defects with existing terminal and runway space.
Sydney being the main international gateway to Australia and a key port for the Australian domestic airlines was the main culprit. Slot times for inbound aircraft and start clearances for outbound flights are now part of the everyday scene at Sydney Airport. With deregulation in Australia now less than 18 months away Sydney Airport with its lack of terminal facilities and runway space is a deterrent to any new operator. Both Ansett and Australian Airlines are pushing the frequency of schedules. The fact that they are replacing their Boeing 727-200 fleets with aircraft of a similar or smaller cabin size will certainly not ease the problems at Sydney in the years to come
