The prototype Mamba is certainly an unusual, though not unattractive aircraft. A number of design changes though will be effective for production aircraft including removal of the underwing podded fuel tanks. In later years the fitment of a rotary engine would serve to streamline the presently very wide nose in addition to improving the overall CofG distribution.
Update – MAC Mamba
Mamba
Australia’s entrant to the international training market
In the vacuum created by the withdrawal of the US manufacturers of light singles, groups all round the world seem to be designing and building two and four seaters.
Nowhere is this trend more evident than in Australia, where there are at least seven different projects to produce a new light aircraft. What’s more, most of these projects are to produce completely new craft.
While the principles are clear and many successful design solutions well known, it’s not that easy to take a clean sheet of paper and come up with a working aeroplane that is both effective in its role and responsive to fly. An insight into this process is available in the recent history of what looks like becoming a successful entrant in the light singles field, the Mamba, from Melbourne Aircraft Corporation.
