RR Tay as fitted to a BAC-111. It is anticipated that the Tay will also be retrofitted to the DC-9 and 737.
Thrust For The Future
Thrust Forth Future: The Progress of Rolls-Royce’s Tay Engine
Requirements for the Tay engine programme, launched in 1983, envisaged meeting all current and proposed noise legislation, complying with regulations controlling exhaust emissions and, at the same time, offering a low fuel burn as well as having competitive maintenance costs and a high level of reliability.
It was considered that these needs could best be achieved by means of a derivative approach and hence technological advances embodied and proved on other Rolls-Royce powerplants were incorporated in the Tay.
Chosen to provide the high pressure (HP) system for the new engine was the core of the Spey (RB183) Mark 555, this variant being the latest and most reliable of the family. Spey engines have given many years of service in both the civil and military fields since their introduction in 1964. To this core have been added features from the RB211 series of turbofans that entered service in an early form on the Lockheed TriStar in 1972. In particular, the wide chord fan and intermediate pressure (IP) compressor on the Tay are derived from developed features of the RB211-535 and the new high efficiency low pressure (LP) turbine is based on the same engine’s design principles.
