New Airline Flying Training College at Tamworth Will Be a World Leader
The new British Aerospace/Ansett International Flying Training College to be established at Tamworth in northern NSW early next year will be the best of its kind in the world.
This is the view of Sir Peter Abeles, joint managing director of Ansett. He expressed it when he recently visited Tamworth to announce the $40m college would be sited in that city.
The Australian college will be based on that conducted by British Aerospace at Prestwick in south-western Scotland. It trains men and women between . 18 and 25 years of age over a 16 month course to be ready to go straight onto domestic and international wide bodied jets and other airliners as second officers. Both the Australian and Scottish facilities are designed to help meet the worldwide shortage of qualified airline pilots. The US alone needs 10,000 new pilots a year. Similar huge demands have developed in Europe, Asia and Australia. In Australia, the demand is so great the Federal Government has had to pay special incentives to try and retain Service pilots.
