From The Cockpit – Cessna 210

Cessna 210 Centurion

From the late 1940s through ’50s, as Cessna’s single engined aircraft product line developed from the bottom upwards, the Company had an excellent trainer, cheap personal transporter and arguably the best utility range about.

Surprisingly perhaps, the Wichita giant had nothing on offer to compete at the top end of the single engine aeroplane market Beech’s V35 Bonanza or Piper’s Comanche, aircraft that were bred for performance and not utility. The Bonanza, for example, from its inception in the 1948 market was presented solely and exclusively as a top class business/personal transporter.

Almost a decade after the entrance of the Beech 35, Cessna flew the prototype Model 210, in January 1957. When it emerged as a certificated Cessna 210, pundits were quick to find a new aeroplane, not simply a 182 with retractable gear and a bigger powerplant. The first 210 certainly had the lower model characteristics of the day- such as ‘straightback’, upright fin and strutted wing, but its performance, emanating from a 260bhp Continental IO-470E, was definitely something else. As a four seater, pilot and passengers were looking at a 1,300fpm climb and a 170kt cruise; for a MTOW of 2,9001b, the airframe offered 1,160Ib useful load, whilst the engine came with a 1,200hr TBO. However the fuel capacity of 65 USG underscored that which was required for a reasonable range.
