The first operational PC·9s are now flying regular training missions with the Pearce based No.2 FTS. New Engine Overhaul Edict a Blow for Many Light Aircraft Owners:
The owners of light aircraft, particularly private flyers and vintage aircraft owners, are up in arms over the CAA’s proposed ruling that all piston engined aircraft should be fully overhauled every 15 years irrespective of hours flown in that period.
According to AOPA, the move, if implemented, could affect more that a third of the aircraft on the Australian register. The impetus for the move by the CAA, without consultation with industry, was obviously motivated by fear of engine failures as engines age with time as well as hours flown or number of flights, since age can also reduce life. But, AOPA responds that this is also greatly affected by how the hours are flown. If flown, for instance, one hour per week fairly regularly with a caring owner/pilot and the engine gets thoroughly hot, it is much less likely to get into internal corrosion troubles than a 100 hour unit per annum which may fly longer periods throughout the year but at a much lower frequency.
