• The Federal Government will not update the RAN’s remaining Wessex MK31B helicopters. Original intentions were to re-engine the helicopters with twin Gnome turboshafts, upgrade the avionics and install a Louis New-man autopilot system at an estimated unit cost of $2m. The future is now uncertain for the RAN Wessex fleet which has average airframe times less than 3,000 hours.
• The Royal Navy’s first Sea Harrier squadron, No 700A was commissioned at NAS Yeovilton on 19 September. The squadron will be based at Yeovilton when the aircraft are not deployed on HMS Invincible and her sister ships.
