The USAF TR-1 and U-2R fleet will get a considerable performance boost if plans mature to equip the type with the GE F101-GE-F29. Presently powered by the somewhat geriatric P&W J75-P-13 turbojet, the primary benefits of reengineering would be reduced maintenance, increased endurance and enhanced range/payload capability. A TR-1 is undergoing flight test with the new engine which essentially is a non afterburning version of the F101 used to power the B-1B bomber.

Engine Overhaul Edict Deferred:
Following overwhelming consternation at the CAA’s edict that all piston engines must be completely overhauled at a minimum of every 15 years (refer p12 Sept 89 AA) the Authority has relented and instead moved to issue an Aviation Regulatory Proposal (ARP) to officially determine the final outcome of the matter. This is generally seen as a face saving exercise as the original edict is neatly swept away from public attention in the coming year. In the meantime though it still places an uncertainty on the future value of a large number of aircraft in the GA fleet. Industry observers consider that it would have been a lot cheaper, simpler and honourable for the CAA to have simply officially abandoned the idea and withdrawn any uncertainty from the marketplace.
