French firebombers have endured a torrid summer losing 14 crew and four aircraft to accidents whilst fighting forest fires in Corsica and southern France. Latest loss was this Conair F27, pictured here whilst operating in Australia with the then NSCA. Other losses included a Grumman Tracker and two Aerospatiale Puma helicopters. (Jim Thorn)

Norfolk in Surprise Defence Contract Win:
Norfolk Jet Aviation, a division of Norfolk Island Airways, has won a $26m 5 year contract from the Department of Defence.
The win comes as a surprise as Lloyd Aviation were widely tipped as the hot favorites to win a renewal on the DoD contract which they have been fulfilling from their Nowra base for several years now. Like Lloyds, Norfolk will use 5 Learjets to fulfil their commitment which will see between 3,500 and 4,000 flight hours being logged annually. The Nowra based Lears will continue to provide radar calibration assistance and target towing for the RAN and RAAF with both services being further assisted in this regard when the RNZAF A-4 detachment arrives at Nowra around mid year. (refer p10 May 89 AA) Norfolk meanwhile are hoping to place into operation their long awaited DHC Dash 8-100 following that aircraft’s recent arrival in country. Purchased primarily with the intent of linking Lord Howe Island with Sydney, the 38 seat Dash 8 will however first have to satisfy various CAA EROPS overwater requirements before being licensed as suitable to operate the route. The NSW government has also to issue a route licence. Both events were planned to have been resolved during the course of this issue.
