•The RAAF intends to retire its remaining 16 C-47 Dakotas by the end of the year and their roles will be taken over by the Caribou. After their withdrawal from use, four will be retained by the RAAF, two as instructional airframes at Wagga and two will be placed in museums.
• The Boeing 747 celebrated 10 years of commercial airline service on 21 January. Since the first Pan Am flight from New York to London, the number of operators has grown to 57 and 420 747s have been delivered. Boeing has announced a further increase of the 747’s gross weight to 833,000b and Qantas will be the first airline to operate the 747 at the new gross weight. Qantas now has 19 7475 in service and recently placed a $320m order for five more 747s with spares, including its first 747SP and second Combi.
