The 747 has also revolutionised the now massive air freight industry with over 100 of these leviathan freighters operating worldwide. One of the world's leading air freight airlines, Lufthansa, operates a fleet of 6 dedicated 747 freighters and 14 747 Combis while a number of the carrier's 7 47-400s will be delivered in Combi and possibly Freighter configuration. A market for aged passenger 747-100s and -200s will in the decade to come be in their future use as rebuilt freighters, a move that is already beginning to occur.

Boeing 747 Celebrates 20 Years of Service
Boeing’s international ambassador, the giant 747 jetliner has started its third decade of service. On January 21, 1970, the first Boeing 747 made the first commercial flight carrying 352 passengers and crew on a Pan American World Airways flight from New York to London.
During the dedication of the 747 at the 1968 rollout ceremony, then Boeing Chairman and Chief Executive Officer William M Allen said: “We have an aeroplane now, a remarkable one. Let us move forward to see it in service on the airlines. ”
And into service it went, just six months later a million passengers had been carried by 747s. Nearly one billion passengers have been transported to their destinations by 747s in the past 20 years.
