Additional Thoughts on Airspace Management
In my previous article about the applicability of European procedures in Australia (refer p71 Jan ’90 AA), I asked a lot of questions about our system but only hinted at possible answers. I would like to develop that theme this time. I do not pretend to have an answer to every question my scheme might provoke, nor have I addressed every problem in the present system. What I am suggesting is merely a skeleton, the flesh can only be provided by detailed in-depth planning.
The computerised radar displays about to be installed in Canberra, Brisbane, Sydney, Cairns and Coolangatta have one great advantage over the ‘stone age’ systems presently in use. They automatically track and identify all aircraft displaying appropriate transponder codes. This frees the operator from this time consuming task and makes more time available for processing and assisting aircraft. It also means that an aircraft not requiring a full separation service is just as easily tracked as one that does. So what, I hear you say. Well, those aircraft could already be displayed on the present ‘stone age’ screens, but you would need an army of controllers to keep track of them. Not very cost effective.
So, how can we utilise the new technology to the industry’s best advantage at minimum cost?
