Jodel From The Cockpit
Jodel
In Europe M Robin has been one of the foremost equivalents of the Big Three US manufacturers of single engine light planes.
Over the years of production since 1957, the designs of Avions Pierre Robin (formerly Centre Est Aeronautique, CEA) have maintained a distinctive appearance; the roots of their genealogy can be found in a range of home built designs that started as an ultralight type. This was the Jodel series.
The Jodel designs emanated from a single seat ultralight monoplane of very straightforward construction, intended by its designer to be for the amateur homebuilder market. Designer Jean Delemontez and test pilot Edouard Joly formed the Societe des Avions Jodel in 1946 and commenced design work on the D9 Bebe Jodel, which was subsequently first flown in January 1948. It was possible in 500 manhours construction time to put together a D9. After the plans were productionised, a 2 seat model, the D11, fitted with the 45hp Salmson engine was developed. Several thousand plans of the D9 and D11 have been supplied to homebuilders in all four corners of the globe. The designs were also cost amenable to commercial production and build licences were issued to CEA, Wassmer (both French) and Aero-Diffusion of Spain. The D9 grossed at 320kg and cruised at 75 knots, whilst the D11 of MTOW, cruised at 95 knots.
